What is the difference between a skid and a pallet?
The key difference between a skid and pallet lies in the construction. Skids are timber pallets with only a top deck or platform. They are both flat transport structures suited for a variety of uses. Skids are commonly called ‘nestable pallets’ too as they are easy to stack and store when not in use, designed to sit inside each other.
Skids take up less space, are lighter, are better for static storing, and generally are cheaper than pallets because they require less materials to make. They have simple ‘feet’ under the loading deck, whereas pallets have three or four stringers in either direction to provide greater support.
Pallets usually support more weight because of their double deck design, which offers more stability and can bear a bigger load during transport.
